Prepare your child for independent living and life without you

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my child's life expectancy?
  • Where will my child live when he or she is 18?
  • Where will my child live after I have passed away?
  • How will his or her transportation needs be met?
  • How much money can my child earn?
  • Will my child need ongoing care and supervision? If so, who will provide it?
  • How can we plan for a change in his or her physical or emotional needs if that occurs?
  • How can I ensure my child will remain eligible for government benefits?
  • How will the future care of my child affect my retirement and estate plans?

It is important to discuss with your child every aspect of his or her care and future in order to decide together on the best living arrangements.

Families raising children with disabilities face extra challenges when it comes to financial planning, considering the medical and other costs you face. Yet planning does work and it will reduce your stress. Although your circumstances may not be easy, taking charge of your financial affairs will lead to a renewed sense of empowerment and possibility for the future.
